And we’re off

pilllllls.jpg

We have a lot of pills for the plane rides to and from Brazil. Some of them I’ve taken today. “This time I think you should try a whole Ativan,” Lefty said over the phone earlier. “You need to see if it works!” I did as she said, because Left Hook knows best.

Uh, it works.

Now I’m all gloopy from half an Ambien and totally won’t remember writing this tomorrow. Also, my fingers are very, very, very long. (Does that happen to other people?)

It’s sort of difficult to concentrate on the Brazil guidebook when Brazil is still a total abstraction. I did manage to absorb two things.

There is a cheeseburger to be had in Brazil called an X-tudo. That’s pretty awesome, right? Like, what a tough, sexy cheeseburger! But then Left Hook said she thinks X is pronounced like Sh in Portuguese, so scratch that. Now I’m thinking it’s more of a sleazy porno cheeseburger.

And then there’s the kissing thing.

Kissing is a common sight at these clubs–young Brazilians sometimes exchange kisses after just a few words. It’s viewed as harmless flirtation as long as neither party strenuously objects. Don’t be offended if someone you just met moves in for a smooch.

A little peculiar, maybe, but is it really so different from how I behave when I first meet someone I like? Swap out kissing for weeping and clinging and there I am!

We fly for Sao Paulo at 9:30ish am. Pray for us. (If you ever pray.)
